Because the faster you push an electrical signal through copper, the more it degrades into heat instead of information — and at AI cluster speeds, that heat penalty becomes so severe that copper consumes more energy fighting its own physics than actually moving data.

Optical fiber, on the other hand, carries the same data as pulses of light: No resistance, no heat, no signal decay — just information, moving at the speed of light.

The largest hyperscalers on earth figured this out eighteen months ago.

They are currently in the middle of the largest industrial spending spree in history — $160 billion per year and rising — and it is hitting a physical supply chain that cannot scale at software speed.
